What does a production company actually do?

Cinema comes from what cannot be seen

“What do you do for a living?”

“I work at an audiovisual production company.”

“Wow, that’s cool! So do you shoot footage?”

“No, I’m not on operations.”

“Oh, are you a director?”

“No—”

“—An actor?”

“No…”

“So… what do you do?”

“I’m a producer.”

“Oh!” Pause. “But then what do you actually do?”

Ah, the life of a producer!

It’s a conversation that those of us who work in production know all too well.

And we know that, from the outside, our job isn’t always easy to pin down.

We’re not the ones in front of the camera, nor are we the ones directing a scene. And we’re not even the grip crew (even though the number of sets we sometimes find ourselves moving might suggest otherwise, alas).

We’re the ones who take care of everything you don’t see, but which is just as essential—along with a few hundred other things—for that shot to actually exist.

A location, a crew, a production schedule, a budget, a solution when something changes at the last minute.

And yes, put that way, it sounds a bit like “doing everything.”

Welcome to the art of problem-solving: the reason we always have a Plan B, often a Plan C, and, in the most interesting cases, a highly developed imagination.

A story doesn't begin on set

The producer’s role is just one of the many roles that keep a production company running.

Production, directing, creativity, cinematography, editing, motion design, VFX, sound, organization. Every project involves different people and skills, which vary depending on the needs.

Because a production company doesn’t just make videos.

It takes an idea, a need, or a communication goal and builds the entire process needed to turn it into content.

It could be a short film, an advertising campaign, a corporate video, social media content, or an immersive project.

Formats change.

The work, however, is always the same: making things happen.

Before anyone says, “Action!”

When you think of a production, you often picture the set.

In reality, by the time you arrive on set, a good portion of the work has already been done.

Before that come the concept, screenplay, storyboard, location scouting, casting, permits, budgets, production schedule, logistics, and a vast number of details that often never make it onto the screen.

Even the seemingly simplest project hides much more work than meets the eye.

Because behind just a few seconds of footage, there can be weeks of calls, location visits, revisions, and that magical moment when someone says: “Okay… but what if we did it completely differently instead?”

That’s when you realize that your true role isn’t producer, director, or cinematographer. In moments of crisis, you’re actually a psychologist, mediator, negotiator, motivator, and, if necessary, even a magician.

When the set comes to life

Then, finally, it’s time to shoot.

It’s the most iconic part of our work.

But it’s also the part where everything we’ve prepared up to that point has to actually work.

Every department knows its role, every choice has to fit together with the others, and dozens of decisions are made in real time without losing the rhythm.

Sometimes there are just a few of us. Sometimes there are dozens of us.

But the principle remains the same: to transform a complex mechanism into something fluid, so that all attention can be focused on one thing: the story.

When filming ends (spoiler: it never ends)

When the cameras stop rolling, the project isn’t over.

It simply moves to a different department.

Post-production begins: editing, color correction, sound design, music, visual effects, animations, and finalization.

This is when the footage we’ve gathered finally takes shape.

And when we convince ourselves that the final version will truly be the final one.

More or less.

So, what does a production company actually do?

We build everything needed to turn an idea into reality.

Sometimes that means telling a brand’s story. Sometimes an artist’s. Sometimes a story. Every project is different.

What never changes is how we approach it: with creativity, organization, and a healthy dose of problem-solving.

Because, in the end, that’s exactly what production is all about.
